Life as an ESL Teacher
Do you enjoy traveling to new and exotic lands and meeting new and exotic people, as well as experiencing new cultures? If so, a career in ESL is definitely for you. Though salaries vary from country to country, the one constant is that you will be living comfortably on a far-above-average salary for the nation you choose to teach in. You will not complain about teachers' salaries again, because ESL teachers draw far better salaries than the average worker in the country where they are working. This is not to imply that ESL instructors will become rich; salaries are often low by western standards, but still offer the buying power equivalent to several thousand dollars per month relative to their economies. For more detailed information about typical salaries and living conditions in a given country, as well as other information about that country, click on our "ESL information by country" link on the navigation bar.

Since most schools, typically in Asia, will reimburse your flight, in exchange for a 12 month contract, being an ESL instructor can be like getting unlimited round-trip tickets virtually anywhere in the world for the low, one-time price of your TESOL certificate program.

ESL teaching is hard work, but it is enjoyable work. You have the opportunity to meet students from unique and fascinating cultures, who are eager about learning (usually) or at the very least excited to meet and talk to people in your country. It is challenging work as well, both in terms of preparing interesting and productive lessons and dealing with all the new and sometimes shocking experiences of being a stranger in a strange land.

After work is over, however, there are still plenty of opportunities to go relax and enjoy the country where you are teaching?

Isn't that, after all, at least one reason why you came there?

Work out or relax in lovely fitness/recreation centers like this for only a few dollars a month. What could be more perfect than to go to an exciting and rewarding job every day and still have plenty of time to relax, unwind, and enjoy your life?

Are exotic getaways more your thing?

There are countless destinations to choose from, including the Aztec and Inca pyramids, the Great Wall of China, turquoise waters with white sands, lush, magical rain-forests with diverse flora and fauna, and urban and rural cultural wonderlands throughout the world. Are you into nightlife? ESL affords an opportunity to go to some quite reasonably priced and hopping joints. Enjoy some of the best clubs in the world with some of the hippest international bands. You are sure to make all kinds of exciting and exotic new acquaintances, or can simply relax and enjoy some music and a few drinks with your friends following the day or week teaching. Enjoy meeting exotic people and experiencing new cultures? You can immerse yourself in interesting, new lifestyles both in and out of the classroom. Meet lovely people who have a sweetness and charm only read about in the West. View fascinating cultural rituals, costumes and dances, participate in interesting ceremonial events, sample new foods, etc. An exciting new world awaits you.
