so during their junior year of college or during the summer between their sophomore and junior years.Exchange programs are also available for high school students, graduate students, and adult students.
Students who participate in exchange programs often gain command of a foreign language and expand their understanding of other cultures. For many students, an exchange program provides their first experience with independent living. Students who participate in exchange programs generally stay in dormitories or in the homes of host families while in the foreign country. Students who stay in homes have the added benefit of experiencing the day-to-day activities of a host family while pursuing their studies.
Most American colleges and universities accept academic credit for student exchange participation. Many offer their own study-abroad programs, often with courses taught by regular members of the institution’s faculty. Students can also find programs through American colleges or universities located in foreign counties. These institutions are structured like schools in the United States and generally offer classes in English. Some foreign universities also offer special courses for international students that focus on the language, history, and culture of the host country. Credit for these courses can sometimes be difficult to transfer to a student’s home college or university.

Cultural and Intercultural Awareness
Being able to develop cultural awareness begins by understanding what culture is. Culture is the values, beliefs, assumptions and ideas that a people and/or a society hold in common.
Although it is sometimes simple to notice the differences from one culture to another, it is not always easy to be conscious of how we behave in our own culture. When you enter into a culture different from your own, you are exposed to new sights, sounds, and ideas, people and feelings. Much time is spent experiencing this "New World". Understanding the new culture is very important but so is understanding your own culture. In fact, the more you understand about the origins of your own values, practices, and beliefs, the more you will be able to understand another culture.
Another great reason to develop cultural awareness is that it makes your entire experience as an exchange student more memorable. By opening your eyes to the new details of your surroundings you actually take in more of the experience and years later you'll be surprised to realize how vivid your memories of your exchange experience can be.
However you look at it, cultural awareness is essential to getting along in a new culture. The more effort you put into developing cultural awareness, the more successful you will be in your international exchange program. A special focus on cultural awareness should be made in the weeks and months before departing to prepare yourself for the upcoming exchange by reading, watching videos and intercultural programs, and by writing a journal of your thoughts and your expectations as an exchange student. Make a list of your expectations for the exchange experience and make brief written descriptions of how you will or would like to act in certain situations that may arise with friends, your host family or at school. Don't just wait until packing your suitcase to think what it will be like, be prepared and take measures to prepare yourself.
After your arrival it is interesting to compare your expectations written in your journal before departure with what you find after arrival. You will learn a lot about cultural awareness just by recognizing stereotypes that you had about your own culture and the new culture you are living in.
Personal Growth while studying abroad
Spending a summer, semester of year abroad will affect you in many ways. Your experiences as a traveler will add a new dimension to your personality in ways that you could not have expected. Few people get to have the experience of being immersed in a new culture, living its daily life and being a part of a native family, their home life and customs.
You may find that after you return you have a stronger ability to come to conclusions and that your ability to make decisions has increased significantly. You may also find that you are better able to understand your weaknesses, successes, and failures and that you know better your goals, values and emotions.
Your sense of self-reliance will increase as you have gained a new independence and have come to be willing to accept responsibility for your own actions. By going abroad you become an adventurer, a traveler, and explorer. You learn by experience. Most of all you get the opportunity to understand a foreign country and people of another culture in a way that is never possible as a tourist. And what you learn will give you self-reliance when facing the world as a student, as a professional, as a traveler, and in countless other circumstances.
Improving your Foreign Language Skills
There is no better way to learn a language than by being immersed in the culture of its native speakers. Studying Spanish in Spain, French in France and English in the United States gives you the opportunity to learn a foreign language where it originated, allowing you to speak the language fluently and in its purest form. Two Worlds United Study Abroad programs allow you to live with a carefully selected host family in the country of your choice. During your program you will develop your language skills as a member of the society thus learning common expressions and learning to communicate in all of the day to day situations that arise.
Studying the language before your departure is very helpful and knowing some basics of the new language will help you to get along in every situation throughout your exchange experience. It will allow you to be more comfortable in your host family, meet more people, enjoy more activities and be more independent.
Studying and living in a foreign country is the best way to learn a new language. Speaking the language will make your host family and friends proud of you, and it will allow you to explain details to others about yourself, your family and your home country. When you've come to know the language well you will feel an accomplishment and pride at having mastered such a difficult task.
Developing language skills is a gradual process. Studying language in school is one of the best ways to prepare to be an international exchange student and to develop your language skills. Try to do the best you can in class because by putting in effort to learn language in class you will really train yourself to put in effort while you are actually abroad speaking the new language as an international exchange student. While you can not learn everything in class, it is essential to have the basic vocabulary and grammatical rules to fall back on |
